Christmas 1914 was a somber occasion
with the outbreak of World War I, especially in Scarborough where the only
shells to fall on British soil fell on Castle, killing 45 people and causing
more damage than Centuries of Warfare.

On December 14th the battle cruisers
Defflinger and Van der Tann of the German Navy stood of the Yorkshire coast and
bombarded the most prominent target standing on the cliff tops high above the
surf. The Castle is maintained by the

City Park on Oliver's Mount within Scarborough, in June for the top National
Competitors and September when the line up includes the best International
riders.
